What’s Urgent Care for Pets?

Urgent care for dogs and cats is designed to address issues and illnesses that shouldn’t wait until their next primary care appointment, but that aren’t severe enough for an emergency visit. Your pet may need an urgent care visit if they’re exhibiting symptoms like:

Coughing, sneezing, and runny nose; ear infections; eye issues like tearing, redness, discharge, squinting, excessive blinking, or rubbing at eyes; changes in behavior

Bites and stings; cuts and scratches; pain or limping; paw wounds, cuts, or burns; broken and overgrown toenails

Diarrhea or vomiting; changes in appetite; possible or known toxic or foreign body (toys, chews, etc.) ingestion; urinary issues like straining or frequent urination

Itching, scooting, or rashes; lumps, bumps, and growths; worms, fleas, ticks, or mites

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Urgent care for pets can address many issues and injuries that shouldn’t wait, but if your pet has severe bleeding, was hit by a car, is unconscious or unresponsive, has collapsed, or is experiencing extreme pain or life-threatening symptoms, they likely need emergency care. If you’re not sure if your pet is experiencing an issue that qualifies as urgent, call your local hospital and we can help assess their needs over the phone.

Due to our operating hours and, on rare occasions, issue severity or complexity, we are unable to provide the 24-hour services or overnight hospitalization required of an emergency hospital.

All Lovet locations reserve same-day time slots specifically for urgent needs, though appointments are subject to availability. You are always welcome to walk in during business hours, but if you’d like to guarantee being seen as quickly as possible, we recommend calling ahead of time or booking an appointment online.

Simply book online! You’ll have the option to select the nature of your appointment in our scheduling tool. You can also call your preferred hospital during business hours. Find a Location >

When your pet isn’t feeling their best or is experiencing a mild to moderate issue that shouldn’t wait until their next check-up, they might need urgent care. Symptoms of sudden or severe illness, infections, or injuries usually qualify as urgent care needs. Urgent care for pets is very similar to urgent care for humans; it may be helpful to ask yourself, "If this was myself or my kids, would I go to the ER, urgent care, or make a doctor’s appointment?"

Our hospital hours are dependent on location and staffing. You can view the operating hours of Lovet hospitals in your area using our locator tool. Find a Location >
